Who manufactures Ol Roy Dog Food?
Ol Roy is the also known as the Wal-Mart dog food brand. It’s made my Mars Petcare, the biggest pet food company in the world. They also make Pedigree and Whiskas cat food.
Looking at the ingredients, Ol Roy pet food isn’t a very healthy dog food. Most people buy it because of its low price. Many dogs might do fine on it, but they can do better. Some people think, “It’s just a dog,” so they get the cheapest dog food they can find.
Ol Roy High Performance Dog Food
This is the ingredients list for the Ol Roy High Performance Food, their best quality variety:
Meat and Bone Meal, Ground Yellow Corn, Ground Wheat, Corn Gluten Meal, Animal Fat[Preserved With Bha and Citric Acid], Wheat Middlings, Soybean Meal, Natural Flavor, Salt, Potassium Chloride, Choline Chloride, Zinc Sulfate, Vitamin E Supplement, Ferrous Sulfate, Color Added[Red # 40, Yellow #5, Blue #2], L-Lysine, Calcium Carbonate, Zinc Oxide, Niacin, Copper Sulfate, Vitamin A Supplement, Biotin, Manganous Oxide, Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin B-12 Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex[Source of Vitamin K Activity], Riboflavin Supplement, Sodium Selenite, Calcium Iodate, Folic Acid, Vitamin D-3 Supplement, Cobalt Carbonate.
Even though the first ingredient is an animal protein, it’s meat and bone meal. This is better than meat by-product, but not as good as whole chicken, whole beef, whole lamb, etc. They don’t even tell you which animal it’s from, and it’s the only animal protein source in the product. After that, it’s three fillers, animal fat chemically preserved with BHA, and more fillers.
This brand would never make anyone’s list of ten best dog foods because of what’s in it. It’s likely it dominates most ten worst lists. Of course, if you’re feeding Wal-Mart dog food to you pet, you probably don’t care about anyone’s list.
Ol Roy Dog Food Recall
As long as you stay aware of future product recalls, your dog might be fine on this diet. In 2008, Mars Petcare recalled several of their dog food brands for Salmonella.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — Franklin, Tennessee (September 12, 2008) –Today, Mars Petcare US announced a voluntary recall of products manufactured at its Everson, Pennsylvania facility. The pet food is being voluntarily recalled because of potential contamination with Salmonella serotypeSchwarzengrund.
A year before that, there was another recall, for Melamine.
Both pet food recalls involved the Ol Roy brand.
Ol Roy Coupons
If you’re looking for the cheapest dog food available, Ol Roy brand is it. You can even find coupons for it sometimes. But with pet food, you really get what you pay for. Should feeding your dog really be so cheap? Many people don’t consider what’s going into their own food, so you wouldn’t expect them to think about the stuff they feed their pets.
Is It Good or Bad?
What you choose to feed your pet can be very personal. It’s easy to get defensive because you want to be considered a loving dog owner. If your dog is doing fine on Ol Roy dog food, then keep on doing it, but know that there are much higher quality dog food brands. And remember to scan the news in case of a future Ol Roy recall.
